THE INDUSTRIAL OUTLOOK. ' Canon Alexander devoted his eermon at I S't. Paul's. London, recently to the subject of the industrial outlook. Ho said that the only solution of the present problem of labour was to be found in the co-operation which had carried us safely through tho last few years. The country must hold fast to its newiywined spirit of brotherhood, and show n solid and united front to the disruptive forces of nn irresponsible fanaticism which did dishonour to the temper by which our victories had lieen won. The call of patriptUmi was just as urgent in the troubles'of peace as in the perils of war. The most passionate desire for (he amelioration of the life of the people should not blind U3 to the fact that all who contributed to the ontpu of an industry in any way whatever wore ineuibers of one Ixidy, tho parts of which were very closely interrelated, and that therefore a spasmodic rise of wages in one pjace might caeily mean a lowering of thu country's productive power in another. The best and most thoughtful of our workingmen knew well enough thot, whatever momentary gains might seem to >bn made by any one class by selfishness or violence' or indilference to Hie needs of others, the permanent good of every class depended on the welfare of the whole community. There was likely now to bo a groat industrial development in Huh country. Unless capital were driven away, 'Britain would be in twenty years richer than slio had ever been before. Tho question whether she would be happier depended on tho good sense, patience, and moderation of her working people. On the other hand, our omployers oiifiht to realise—as many of them did not— thnt immense arrears had to be made up to our working-people, and that they could claim groat compensations for past neglect and indifference. All that llrey had suffered in the past appealed to-day to on,r sense of justice. What if the, pendulum swung rather far the oilier way? Must we not fiee to it that every men should have his place in the sun, and that the. poorest should secure Ins chaiicito live? . I
