BUTTER BOXES

Referring, to the short supply and high prices of butter boxes, Mr. K Harding stated at the North Auckland Dairy Conference that as a result of the representations of the committee of the conference, the Efficiency Board, the National Dairy Association, and individual companies, the Board of .Trade had proclaimed definite regulations governing the export of timber from New Zealand. The fundamental principle; of these was the' requirement of a license to expor!, the issue of which was governed by stipulations as to'adequate provision for local requirements. The operation of these regulations was strongly opposed by the timber companies which were largely controlled from Australia, and th,e regulations bad so far been ineffective. Kvidence was available that boxes of New Zealand timber were supplied in Australia <at prices lower than in New Zealand, though this was denied by the box companies. The question .of an adequate supply of boxes hud been an anxious one to manv companies,,some.factories having difficulty in packing their daily output. Prices had also hardened, local nefds being mibordiuated to Australian orders, lie had maintained a personal correspondence with the Board of Trade and the Forestry Office oft various aspects of the. question without any. concrete result. >■
