P. AND O.' AND ORIENT LINES. London, January 7., It is rumoured in the city that the Peninsular and Oriental Company has acquired a controlling interest m the. Orient Steam Navigation Company — Aus.-N.Z; Cable Assn. [The Orient mail and passenger lino to Australia is represented in New Zealand . by the Union Steam Ship Company, in which the P. and 0. Company now holds a controlling interest. The Orient Line hnd a fleet of ten steamers, engaged almost exclusively in the Australian trade. Tho company received a subsidy from' the Commonwealth Government of .£170,000 per annum, under contract ending 1920.- The P. and O. Company has also acquired within recent yeairs the New Zealand Shipping Company, the Federal Line, and by combination with tho British-India Company, is interested in the Australasian United Company. The P. and O. also purchased the Hain Mercantile Steamship and Nou.rse Lines. Its interests are now concerned in the Australasian, TransPacific, China, and Japan trades.!
