ROOSEVELT'S TRIBUTE
• '- ■■.'.- -.. -«- TO THOSE DEAD IN "THE GREAT All VENTURE." ■ '■;• In a remarkable editorial, entitled •"The Great Adventure, , ' which appeared in'the "Metropolitan - Magazine" for October'last, .the. late Colonel Theodore Roosevelt' paid a high tribute to' the pnt- ■ riotio parents-of the nation's soldiery. His touching reference .to "a gallant boy, who. at the.front had fought in high nir, and, like an eaple, fighting, had died," is a paternal tribute, undoubtedly, to his . youngest son, Lieutenant Queritin Roosevelt,* recently- killed in an air-fight on the Western front. Colonel Roosevelt, speaking as \ a parent whose sons have , pnid the price of freedom in death and -.wounds',' litters the proud defiance of death which is the spirit of America's torch-bearers.' ■'.'.'.■ ''■."Only''those are fit to live who do not fear-'to die," he writes,. "and lione are fit in die who have shrunk froni the joy: of life and the duty'of life Both life and ■ death ;are parts of the same Great Adventure. Never yet was. worthy adven- , ..hire, worthily' earned through 'by tho •inan' who put his personal safety first. "Never'yet; was a country worth living in unless its sons .and daughters were of that stern stuff which bad<! them die for it at need.: In America to-day all our people are summoned to service and sacrifice. ■ Pride is the portion only, of those who know bitter sorrow or the foreboding of bitter sorrow. But all of us who .give eervice .arid stand ready for sacrifice are the torch-bearer's." ■
