A sum of £5411 10s. was received by the Wairarapn, Hospital and Charitable Aid Board from local authorities for the half-year ending September 30. The Wairarapa Patriotic Association has a sum of £69,480 on investment.

The total amount advanced by the Wairarapa Patriotic Association to returned soldiers by way of loans up to September 30' was £6428 16s. 9d. Of this sum, £1782 19s. 7d. has been repaid. Under the auspices of the Farmers' Union an educative lecture and demonstration wero given at the Kaiwaiwai Dairy of Donald's Estate on Tuesday bv Captain H. H. S. Kyle, a wellk'nown veterinary expert with practical knowledge of farming. At tho conclusion Mr. W. Barton expressed tho indebtedness of the farmers te Captain Kyle for the information imparted, and thanked the Donald Estate for the facilities provided. Mr. H. Daysh also added a meed of praise to those mentioned.

The presentation of trophies under the 'auspices of tho Carterton Oddfellows' -Miniature Rifle Club, took place on Tuesday evening at a card social. Mr. Lcnde Lacey was presented with a beautiful miniature cup, engraved, the gift of tho club's president, the late Mr. A. Bish, and Mr. V. Crosian received an oak biscuit barrel, engraved. Other trophies were awarded to Messrs. F. Trask and H. Ticehurst. Votes of thanks were accorded Messrs. Busbv, J. S. Beard (secretary), and AY. J. Churchill (treasurer and caretaker). Tho winners at cards wero Messrs. W. Busby, J. B. Bairstow, W J. Churchill, and W. Ogier. "Auld Lang Syno" brought a pleasant evening to a. close. The Carterton group of the Protestant Political Association held a social evening in the Presbyterian Jlall on Monday evening, when Major M'Nau'ght delivered an address' on "Patriotism and Sacrifice," after which the ladies dispensed refreshments. Musical items were contributed by several present. It is intended to hold similar gatherings monthly. The sum of £24105. 3d. was recently collected in Carterton for the liarnardo Homes.

Shortly before the late Corporal M. Anderson left for the war centre ho was presented by the South Wairarapa Trotting Club with a wristlet watch, suitably inscribed. Ho was subsequently killed in action, and the watch turned up in Auckland about a month ago in the kit' of the late Sergeant Barnes, who was also killed in action. On receipt, of the watch Mrs. Barnes, mother of the deceased soldier, _at once communicated with the South Wairarapa Trotting Club, asking for the address of the next-of-kin of the late Corporal Anderson, which-was promptly supplied, and thanks to Mrs. Barnes tho watch has been safely returned to Mrs! J. Anderson, of Mauriceville West, mother of the deceased soldier. The distribution of trout fry from the Masterton lish hatcheries has ken completed for the season. The allocation was as follows:—Brown trout: Wairarapa South, 30,0(10; Ekctahuna, 30 000; Pahiatua, 30,000; Masterton, 40,000; Taihapc, 15,000; Palmerston North, 18,000. Rainbow trout: I'aihape, 20,000; Palmerston North, 10 000; Mangaweka, 10,000; Taliiatua, 12',000j Hunterville, 23,000; Marten, 25,000. A petition handed Mr. G. It. Sykes, M.P., on behalf of the No-License League,, contained 3095 names, or, nearly half-the number of names upon tho electoral roll for the district. A tender of £155 has been, accepted for the laying down of a double lawn tennis court at the Masterton Hospital. At the end of last month there wero 36 patients in the Masterton Hospital. 17 in the Grey town, and 13 in iho 'At the'weekly meeting of the Claims Board in Masterton four applications for temporary assistance were dealt with, and a loan was granted a returned! soldier. . , The estimated receipts in patients fees for the Masterton Hospital in the ensuin"- year was £1750. For the first half of the year only £483 3s. 4d. has been collected. ' . With tho assistance of local subscriptions it is proposed to erect a swing bridge between .the Masterton Bark and the public hospital. . Another member of the leather «on .County Council, Mr. A. C. Pearce, who has for a number of years past represented the Kahutara Hiding, has tendered his resignation.
