AN UNLICENSED ALIEN

GERMAN POSES AS A SWISS. By Telegraph—Press Association; Dunedin, October 16. Eugene Seigle, a young German, called at Stevenson and Cook's foundry at Port Chalmers recently, and applied for employment. He was asked his nationality, and he replied that he was a Swiss.' He was eventually given work, with the result that in the Police Court.to-day Seiglo was charged that, being an unlicensed alien, he engaged in work on a certain steamer. Stevenson and Cook were charged with permitting Seigle to work on tho steamer. Seiglo pleaded guilty. It was in order to get work that he said ho was a Swiss. He worked only one day. The firm believed he was a Swiss. Counsel for Stevenson and Cook said the trouble arose through the man telling an untruth. When asked for his papers he said he would bring them the following day, but did not do so, saying the police had them. The manager rang up the police. Seiglo was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, and Stevenson and Cook were fined £18 and costs. Mr. Young, S.M., said the firm should have taken further precautions before, engaging the man. The police stated that Seigle had reported himself daily since the war started. His conduct had been all that could be desired.
