NEW HARBOUR AT WAIKOKUPU
WAIROA WORKS TO BE ABANDONED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wairoa, August 26. Following a visit by Sir. F. W. Fnrkert, Government Inspecting Engineer, tho Harbour Board has been supplied with a confidential report. The board has also been granted the services of .Air. A. Stinger, Gisborne Borojgh Engineer, who subsequently net the board in committee. Later the board again met in committee, when it was unanimously decided that a Bill be immediately promoted to authorise the construction of a harbour at Waikokupu, with a railway for the combined districts. This means no .:ioro ixpendittiro on the AVairoa Harbour and the abandonment of works that cost nearly £100,000. The board left for Waikokupu to-day to confer regarding amalgamation. A public meotiig will be held to-morrow to discuss tho position.
Waikolmpu is situated nt the northern extremity of Hawke's Bay. It is said that if a harbour wore made there a depth of 30ft. of water would be obtained. Wairoa, south of AVaikokupu, has always been tho poit, but the bar at tho entrance is a drawback. AVaikokupu is midway between Napier and Gisborne.
