SPAIN AND GERMANY
ENEMY'S REPLY TO SEIZURE OF SHIPPING., Copenhagen, August 25. The German reply to the Spanish threat to seize Gorman- shipping to compensate for losses inflicted by the submarines on the Spanish mercantile marhio says that the seizure of shipping might sever tho good relations between Germany" and Spain. Germany is ready to consider a proposal to limit the torpedoing dono outside the danger zone, but cannot give any guarantee in the matter or t-reat Spain 111 an exceptional way. Germany cannot pbandon submarine war, which is such a valuable weapon; but hopes that Spain will remain neutral.—Ans.-N.Z. Cable Assn. GERMAN JOURNAL ANXIOUS ABOUT IT. (Rec. August 1 27, 0.30 a.m.) Amsterdam, August 25. Tho "Vonvaerts" is greatly concerned over, Germany's strained relations with Spain, and urges tho Government to prevent that country from joining tho enemies, and so^complet- , ing the world's coalition against Ger-many.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. AN AWKWARD DILEMMA. ' (Rec. August 27, 2 a.m.) London, August 26. The "Daily Chronicle's" Amsterdam correspondent states that Ger-niano-Spauish relations seem to' bo causing much uneasiness in Germany. It is_ stated in reliable quarters that tho situation is regarded as most serious. Tho Gorman reply is couched in much stronger terms than the semiofficial announcement suggestexl. Most of the newspapers endeavour to conciliate Spanish feeling, blaming the Entente Powers' propaganda, and are paying ' compliments to "knightly Spain," and telling Spain that she will always find Germany a good friend, but the undercurrent of anxiety is plainly noticeable The "Vossische Zeitung" points out that if Spain breaks off relations, tho movement will carry Spanish-South America, notably the Argentine and Chile, i which would involve irreparable economic loss. Tho German Government's greatest fear apparently is that submission to Spain will create a precedent of which the northern nontrala will quickly tako advantage.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
