UNCLE SAM'S BOYS
AS OBSERVED BY A WOMAN. IJupert Brooko once hazarded the opinion that it was tho wearing of a belt instead of braces (or should one say "suspenders"?) that gave to-the Ameri-, can "inan in tho street" his peculiarly easy and springy walk. It is not for a woman who merely "stands and waits" to inquire as to whether tho sartorial habits of tho aforesaid man in the street arc altered when Sammy puts his uniform on; but ho undoubtedly retains his attractive carriage. After his walk, it is the spcckless grooming of the "Sammy," who is becoming a familiar figure in our London streets, that excites our admiration and envy. The aim of the American woman,'we know, is to appear in the street as immaculately turned out as if she had stepped from a band-box, and her success is considerable. ■ New York is a clean, clear-aired city, as different as . possible from our smoky, gritty metropolis; none (ho less, she has so surely taught her secret to her brothers and cousins and uncles that Sammy nagivatcs our crowded thoroughfares remaining trim and speckless and as serenely aloof as the young "Greek gods" who figures in American clothing store publicity announcements.
We in England arc described as an unfriendly race, but Sammy has not the "matey" characteristics of our Tommy. He is dignified and unbending as the lines, of his hat, he, is self-c-onscious and alert.; he boars the stamp of his recent. intensive training that is immensely cheering lo us "who sit at homo at ease" girdling at our inability to give concrete support to those .who in Franco are holding on till "there is nothing in them except tho will that says to them— Hold on!
Yes, lie wears the loot of a nian -who is determined to make a clean job of a dirty business, and not to go .back "till it's over—over there," to-quote his own great marching song.—"Daily Mail."
