THE CHINESE

LETTER FROM THE CONSUL

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Ono Wong King lias presumed to write to you respecting tho actions ot myself arid the Government of New Zealnnt! in 'trying to establish a good feelj 11LT between Hie people of our respective countries. Wong King is a pen name and is not tho nanio of ono who is not ashamed to use his own name when making personal oriticism, and that boing the caso I writo merely 'to say that unless ho chooses to announce himself i will take no further notico of him. I would liko to say, however, that my countrymen who live in this city are, like myself, very indignant at the aspersions which are being cast at their counI' try by those who have no sense of proportion, and who do not recognise the ! fact that the real 'truth lies midway between the extremes—l am, etc., LIN'SHIII-YUAN, Consul for the Republic of China.

TIIE CHINESE ASSOCIATION.

Sir,—You ' have published a letter signed by "Wong King." At a largely attended meoting ()f tho Chinese Association oil Sunday night, June 30, none of those present knew any Chinese. m_ Wellington by the uamo of "Wong lung. We aro annoyed that anyone should uso a Chineso name and write to the paper and say that all people in China aro like the Miao. We think that "Wong Kin"" must bo Miao himself, bccauso ho works liko a cat in the dark. Wc want "Wong King" to give us his proper name and address, and then we will know whether ho is Chinese or European, or whether ho is what we think ho is— a rice Christian.--'We are, etc., YUE H. JACKSON, MATTHEW SHUM, WONG SHE, CHIU KWOK CHUN, JOE WAH, P. L. LAW, CHIN TING, WAH 10313, JOE LEE, SING ON TIE.
