THE LATE MR. C. Y. FELL
EPISODES IN A NOTABLE CAREER. The late Mr. C. Y. Pell, of Nelson, who died suddenly at the age,of 71 on Sunday morning, was a governor of the Nelson College for 40 years, which probably constitutes a record in such educational service in the Dominion, At tho time of his ..death lie was president of tho Nelson Law Society, and as Crown Prosecutor up till some ten or twelve years ago, his name was connected with most of the notable criminal trials hold in Nelson for nearly half a century past. Of his prowess ns an athlete, the "Nelson Evening Mail" suiu , :—"Mr. Fell was an athlete of much prowess in his younger dnys. -For four years he stroked his college boat at Oxford, and rowed in the Trial Bights. He also obtained distinction at his university as a 220 and (WO yards ruuner and hurdler. At the Caledonian sports held in Richardson's paddock in the Maitai he was a successful competitor. Mr. Fell was ono of the founders of the Nelson Rowing Club and Nelson Athletic and Cycling Club, of which he was at ono time president. Ho took much interest in the Volunteer movement, and joined the Nelson Naval Brigade as lieutenant in the 'eighties, and was afterwards promoted to captain. Being an enthusiastic yachtsman he was a prominent figure at the Nelson regattas, in which ho successfully sailed his own yachts. The legal holidays were often spent in cruises in his yachts the Isisi and Maritana, which he skilfully navigated. In his young days he was a notable horseman. At tho age of fifteen he, in company with his tutor, Archdeacon Paul, rode from Nelson to Chrisfcehurch by way of Tarndalo; and in 1876 he rode from Blenheim to Nelson, by way of the Maungatapu, between 3.30 n".m. and 2.40 p.m. of the same day. In those days he was a very successful exhibitor with his horsus at the agricultural shows."
