THE TURF

FEILDING MEETING

STAKES WON BY LINGERIE. (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.! Folldlng, December 1. For tho Feilding races thero was beautiful warm weather. A large crowd was in attendance. Tho amount put through the totalisator was £30,469, against £19,925 on tho first day lust year, and a total of £41,908 for tho two days. Tho meeting is confined to one day this yeah By Telegraph—Preas Association. R. E. Harley, the starter, acted for the first time, and was entirely successful in all the events except the -Trial Plate. In this race ttyo performers are maidens, and their pilots are apprentices. A far better plan would be to make the race for apprentices an open handicap bo that tho horses would be experienced at tho barrier.

There were nineteen runners in tho Trial Plate. Tho field 6tood fairly well, but when the tapes rose Do Gcur and Skedaddle were left and took no part in the race. Chimera showed out at the start, with Staccato, a good favourite, next. As they raced into the straight Pennon ran to tho front, and the English horse, finishing on well, won nicely from Chimera, while Matilda just beat Berenice, Firßt Siinc, and Lady Kllworth, who finished together. The winner is useful, and will be heard of again.

Nanna led practically the whole way in 'tho Plying; Stakes. Tho Martian Ally was quick to find her feet, and with Hubliman and Ayah in close attendance, Bhe piloted the field into tho straight. Hero Tree Lucerne Bhot out, and challenged the leader,, but she held her own and won by a length. Ayah was third, and then camo Waimatao. Moutoa Queen, and Jean Laddo. Crowhurst ran badlv, and so did Nystad. Tho winner had defeated Hymestra in a try-out before tho meeting, and her own was quito prepared to Bee her win. She is engaged in the Railway Handicap at Eliorßlie, and will now have to put up a 31b. penalty, making her weight 7st. 31b. Probably Mr. W. R. Kemball will prefer to rail her in preference to HymCßtra, who, it is reported, is not looking at his beat. Calais was a good favourite in tho Hurdles, and after indulging Holyhead with the lead for a mile, the favourite then took charge and won well from Veto, who made a good impression for a beginner. Mattock was a fair third, and then canic Pawerewere, Mairua and Otter. Holyhead was a furlong away. Ascalon shaped well for a mile, but then tired, Pawerowere was prominent the whole way. The party behind tho winner-would not hear of his defeat, and his form at Waverloy certainly pointed to hie. success, but ho probably had to do a lot better than his trainer bargained for. Chortle and the ex-hack, Nobleman, were very, pronounced orders in the big handicap, and both .shaped well. Botanist made the running foF'six furlongs, when Nobleman took charge and led into tho straight. He was challenged by Devotion and Chortle at the distance, and the Oaks winner took Charge and won with a bit in hand.- Chortle was close up, and Orleans was fourth with Dribble next. Only two horses were backed with any spirit in the Apiti Hack Handicap. They were Paddington Green and Polynesian. The latter ran a good race, but the favourite was in trouble tho whole way, and was never dangerous. Dingle and Namur led throughout, and the former, ridden out, won- by a bare length from Namur. Mystified was in third place, and 'Cello headed the remainder.

Lingerie drew No. 1 position in tlio Stakes, and this was sufficient to cause backers to send her out a very hot order on. the machine, She began smartly and led throughout. Acre and Birkonvale were always chasing her, and at the turn into the -straight the Australian colt looked ■like catching the leader, but she cams away again and won by a length. Birkenvale drew, the extreme outside, and finished; third, while Finmark was close up fourth. The two-year-old got cut out at the start, or ho .would have done a lot better. Be was finishing on well at the right end of the race and should be handy in the six furlonzs event at Ellerslie. ■ The Prudent King. gelding T.urangapito was in most demand in the Cheltenham Handicap, 'Six furlongs, and 'he won on his merits. Hupana led at a fast pace from King's Armour, and the pair were clear of Astrophel. and .Turangapito as they raced into the straight. The favourite then settled down, and in a great finish he won from Rude by a neck. Warmaid was third, followed by Hupana, King's Armour, and Astrophel. The winner has been a much discussed horse for a long t.ime. It was rumoured last week that he had changed hands, but at Feilding • he ran in the ownership of Messrs. Hall and Woon. After getting knocked back at the barrier riso on Saturday W. Price was fortunate enough to get a clear run on the fence till the straight was reached. He then came out. and by vigorous horsemanship drove tho Prudent King home a winner by a very narrow margin from another Australian-bred gelding.

There w.ere numerous scratching for the 'Open Welter, in which an outsider, in White Blaze, led the whole way. The two favourites, Ohiwia and Probation, got bad passages, the latter being nearly down once. J; O'Shea had his only ride at the meeting on the winner. Like Calais, Dingle, and Nobleman, the winner had raced well at Waverley last month. A satisfactory feature of the race was that it was started well to time. AOItANGI TRIAL PLATE, of 150 soys.
