NOTES AND COMMENTS

fBY GLENCOE.I

At Feilding to-day the card will commence with the Aorangl Trial Plato, five furlongs and a half,.for apprentice riders. There is a big field ongoged, and the draw for positions will havo au important bearing on the order tho horses are fancied by tho public. Included in tho field is the English-bred laud Wanganui-owned Pennon (Coriander— Eulogy). This filly has been galloping well on the tracks, and recently administered a sound drubbing to the speedy Interlude in a daßh over flvo furlongs. Others with, credentials are Turpenita, tho half-brother to .the crack Sydney performer Briseis, and Mulatto. •

Thero is a list of eighteen in the Flying Stakes, six furlongs; but a few of tho runner's may be missing when tho field lines up at the post. Rangitiro is having his first race, and Nystad does not carry weight well. Lady General ran a good race at ABhhurst, and Is evidently coming baok to form, though the'claSß at Feilding will bo better than sho met at Ashhurst. Crowhurst, Moutoa Queen, and Walmatao havo all been racing well lately, and .'aro Burato bo well supported today. •■'■■■ - ' Golden March, who has brokon down, will bo misßing from the Hurdleß field, leaving Mahzoltov at the top of the handicap. Tho black maro will be having her first race for a long time, and may be lacking in condition. Tornea and Holyhead will both set a very fast pace, which wuM suit Calais. The former raced weU at Waverloy and looked like a winner when he fell at the last fence, leaving Colorado a clear run home.

They are not a particularly good lot in the Apitl Handicap, Boven furlongs, and if 'Cello saddles up at his best he may show tho way to tho field. Dingle raced well at Waverley and appears to be coming baok to form. Paddington Green and Black Hill havo both earned their imposts, and are entitled to consideration.

That good horse. Chortle heads tho handicap la the big event, and despite his burden of lOst. lib., many will find it hard to go past him. He is generally credited with having won at Ellcrslie with 31b. moro.on his baok. Ho may not havo tho best of luck In the big field, but with anything like a decent run ho is sure to make a bold showing. A 101b. penalty may mean the defection of Dribble. Dovotion will bo ridden by A. Reed, and can be depended upon toj race well. Nobleman is a big fancy at Feilding, and on Thursday he was responsible for a very taking gallop there. Ho Is to he ridden by the Fordcll light-weight, M. M'Carten. , Some very smart hacka aro engaged in tho Cheltenham Handicap, six furlongs, and in Nanna, Astrophel, Rude, and Turangapito, there is the material for a .good contest.,

The field in the Stakes will not bo a big one, but speculation may be heavy between Acre, Birkenvale, and Lingerie, all winners at Riccavton, and Finmark who will have a big pull-nearly 2st.-in the weights. . Being a' five-furlong race, the draw will bo a big factor towards finding a favourite.

Ohiwai, who showed up well in tho Ashhurst Oup, and won at Folldlng at Easter anoV Probation, a winner at Ashhurst, will probably, both have an army of supporters in the Kiwitea Welter Handicap. The last-named is very well, and the penalty for her Ashhurst win may not trouble her.
