CARGO FOR GREY'MOTJTH. The-Union Company advertise that they will dispatch the collier Kowhal direct for t-rr-ymouth to-day, and that tho vosßel will take general cargo from Wellington. NEW YORK CARGOES. Messrs. Maillcr and Queroau report :- bliortage of shipping in New York has accounted for n. now position which has recently arisen in connection with cargoes for Australia, and which will bo of interest to importers generally. Our New ■ °i k ,°," ico "'rites that they have great difficulties in scpuriiig licences from the txporl Board in Washington, these taking sometimes ten days to two weeks before they come through, and then tho refusal ot the steamship company to take tho goods on th« wharf pending steamer's arrival, and the uncertainty as to whether they will go aboard, as well as the railroads putting into force their rule that delivery must be taken within forty-eight hours ot arrival, have created a very awkward position Jt the goods are left on tho railroads sjidlngs they put them • into a general store, and tho charges are always excessive, Tho shippers must therefore take delivery and thcu put, them into a more and keep them covorcd with lire insurance, and all this means extra cartage, storage, expenses, and insurance, to say nothing of interest on the money laid out in payment for these goods, as in tho circumstances it is impossible to draw bills on tho buyers and so rcimburso ourselves these charges will therefore have to bo added to c.i.f. or o.i.f.e. prices, which, no doubt, will eauso some dissatisfaction among bttj&crs. As, however, tho case seems to be a. most exceptional one, importers will readily understand that the commission made on sales would be quickly absorbed if tho commission houses had to stand theso disbursements. SCOW SINKS. The Collector of Customs at Tauranga yesterday informed the Marine Department that the scow Waikonini, a vessel of 68 tons gross, was washed ashore at Mayor Island on November 21 during tho boisterous southerly gale. The vessel is now full of water and lying on tho beach. There waß no loss of life. At the time the Waikonini was washed ashore she was loading firewood.
