ABSENTEE'S PLEA TO EVADE SERVICE. Born in England in 1801, but residing in Antwerp from 1903 till tho German occupation, when ho returned to England, a. diamond worker named Staal was convicted of being ail absentee from military 6orvico. Against this decision Staal appealed in tho King's Bench Division. Mr. Justice Darling said: British subjects like himself arc sent to light. What for? I'or tho liberty of this man's home which he has loft in Antwerp. He does not light either as a Belgian for his home or as an Englishman. He says, in effect, "I am only technically a British subject, but flint is good enough to excludo mo from lighting in tho "Belgian Army. Now that I am asked to go as an Englishman, I say J ought not to go as I am only technically an Englishman." As a British subject ho camo to England. Ho did not, go to Paris or oven to' Ireland, where ho would be freo to livo without military service and go to the races. Ro decided to coino 1.0 England on tho balance ol' convenience. Tho appoal was dismissed, with costs.
