POI.ICE AND OlVlii CASES. Mi\ b. G. Ileid, S.M., presided a! Iho Magistrate's Couiii yesterday. Three articled seamen on an oversea vessel, named Francis H. Young, Stanley Waygood, and Frederick St. George Gibson, wero charged with unlawfully deserting from the ship. Young pleaded guilty, his excuse being that ho wished to get away ; so that ho could support his mother. Ho i was senlenood to seven days' imprisonment. Waygood a.nd Gibson pleaded not euilty, mid were defended by Mr. H. F. O'Leary. Gibson, who gavo evidence, said they left tho ve&sel early' on Saturday morning, believing that tho Pliip would sail until the following day. When l-hcy went to tho •wharf in tho afternoon tho vessel had ! gone. Ho maintained that ho had 110 intention of deserting, for by losing liis berth ho had lost. £15 in wages. He and tlie others went to the police and put the ease beforo them. Waygood and Gibson wero convicted and ordered to forfeit two days' pay cach. Tanner appeared, proceeded against Mrs. D. 0. George, represented by Mr. A. Dunn, to recover £19 135., alleged to ho diw as rent of a house known as No.-1 Wallace Street. Plaintiff was non-suited on the ground that she had let the house to a man who was the actual tenant, and not the defendant. Whitcombo and Pyni," motor engineers, claimed from Ernest W. Biggs, taxi-driver, the sum of £130 15s. 6d., alleged to bo duo as deposit v on a motor-car, arrears of biro and damage. After a partial* hearing tho case was adjourned to Friday. Mr. E. A. Howie appeared for plaintiffs.
