A. Ewen. to the Historical Research Department of the National Collection, are some very interesting For example the "township" of Timaru, with its map bordered with-iillustrations of notable buildings of the "township/ , is quite a record of ancient history. The date was evidently before the building of the breakwater, and in its place one sees a little boat wharf for the "Government Landing Service," leading up to. tire modest store of Henry Green, beyond which the naked shore stretcheß away to the distant cliffs. Another quaint, map is that of the City of Auckland, published by T: W. Hickson, surveyor, and dated 1882. In size, this map is positively gigantic, and with its cnlourng presents a , curiously ,'kaladescopio appearance. Beneath tho map is a city directory, a reference to which explains tho queer squares, oblongs, triangles, and quadrangles of blue, greeii, and terracotta, which represent not only the buildings, but the material they are composed of, and not only tho buildings from tho lowliest lean-to to the churohes, public buildings, etc., but also fire-plugs, fire-bells, lamps and let-ter-boxes. It is indeed a comprehensive document which ' Mr. Hickson achieved, and yet, not the least of its interest will lie in its blank spaces, most of them long since filled to overflowing. .. ' '-. A simpler and more restful thing is. a map of Now Zoaland in 1900, with the stamp'of S. Percy Smith, as Sur : veyor-General, and the' ancient Maori name of "To Ika a Maue" beneath the North Island, and "Aotea Roa," beneath New Zealand.. A very ornate and somewhat original map is one of tho provincial district of New Plymouth on a scale of one mile to an inch, and for this T. K. Skinner is responsible. The details is so full that one may almost call it a. _ land "document/ , and the county divieion, as well as the coast line, are heavily coloured. On very close observation one reab'ses that it is a composite'map and not only each county, but in many cases each division of a county has been cut out and affixed separately. In fact the whole great map is an incredible neat piece of patchwork,'neat-, ly and. cleanly fitted'on to ite background of paper, that only the closest scrutiny reveals the fact.
