IN PROTEST

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I wish to strongly protest against ihe publication of my name in the list of "deserters" that appeared in this morning's issue of The Dominion. The facts of my case are as follow i-r-At the beginning of February last I reenlisted, and on February 9 on being re-examined by the Medical Board at Buckle Street was rejected for foreign service, and classed as fit for home service only. I was assured then that my name would be removed from the register of those liable, to be called up by ballot. The following week my.name appeared in the ballot. No letter or telegram was sent to me advising me either of my having been drawn or to attend for medical examina.tion.' I therefore concluded that ,the error of including my name in the ballot list had been discovered—that the recruiting office had done its duty and forwarded the record of my re-enlistment to the Department that issues these lists of deserters. This evidently was not done. . ,■

I have received no communication of any kind concerning ,, this matter from the Defence authorities, so that I was not given any opportunity of correcting their mistake before my name was negligently published amongst, those of men who are liable to be court-martial-led.—l am, etc., B.A.HOWIE. .April 28. .
