GERMAN RAID ON RAMSGATE

■ ENEMY DRIVEN OFF ATTACK IN THE DARKNESS The High Commissioner reports:— London, April 27, 1.25 a.m. The Admiralty reports:—Last night several destroyers opened fire hi the direction of Rnmsgate. Their fire was immediately returned. The enemy's ships were driven off after they had fired a large number of rounds. Two persons were killed and three injured. Twenty-one houses and two stables wore damaged, and one horse killed. The projectiles mostly fell in the open countrv. , ■ ■.

SHRIEKING OF SHELLS AWAKENS THE TOWN MUCH NOISE BUT LITTLE DAMAGE. London, April 27. The shrieking of shells awakened Ramsgate at 1.15 this morning, followed by scattered explosions. The attack came without, warning. The whole place was in darkness, 1 in accordance with the rigid rule on the whole of the East Coast. Suddenly vivid star shells lit up the sky, and heavy, firing immediately followed. Tho attack lasted ten minutes. It is estimated that sixty shells were fired, accompanied by a constant stream of star shells. The enemy was apparently firing at random, as the shells fell mostly in the higher part of the town.
