HOSTEL FOR CRIPPLED RETURNED SOLDIERS

' AN ATTRACTIVE ART UNION. The friends and patrons of the Wellington Hostel for Returned Soldiers, Newtown, will be gratified to find that that useful institution is at last to rccoive the benefit of an art union. The institution has done-good work for the friendless warriors who have icturned shattered in health and limbs. Its first annual report, issued recently, shows that since tho hostel has been opened, 13,921 meals and 4724 beds had been suppliud to returned soldiers who were glad to pay their way, and 1931 meals and 685 beds had heen supplied to men who had become stranded in Wellington. Since its inauguration, the hostel has proven to be a home away from homo for men from all parts of the Dominion, particularly those who wore strangers to Wellington, and who, when without money, were without friends. Tho institution has been conducted unostentatiously by a committee of good-heavted ladies, who understand the "littlo comforts a war-worn soldier would apareciate. With tho war running into years, it is now found that 1 the calls upon the hostel would be more satisfactorily met bv larger premises somewhere in the City, handy to tho railway stations and wharves. For this purpose; a popular art union is announced, and at the popular price of sixpence per ticket. Mr. B, Sutherland, of the Railway Department, lins been specially requested- by tho Minister of Internal Affairs to conduct this art union, for tho reason that he has given his services free to no fewor than seven patriotic art unions, all of which have been successful, and he hopes to •, make the present one the most succesful of anj hitherto held in Wellington. For the first prize the Hon. G. AV. Russell has kindly handed over to the hon. secretary, Mrs. Boden, a motor-car. valued at ".£SOO, which had been given to him by Miss Anderson, of Kereru, Hawke's Bay, to be raffled for patriotic purposes. Mrs. T. H. Lowry has personally given iE2OO value in sheep, and her' husband .£IOO, and collected from various Hawke's Bay sheep farmei-9 another ,£l5O value in'sheep. Mrs. Johnston; of Hizhden, lias given .CSO, and Mr. L. Higgins, of Moteo, Hawke's Bay, .£lO, to be expended in gifts or prizes. Also included in the list of prizes are a lady's sealskin coat, to ho made to the order of the lucky winner, to the value of i!GO, and a handsome diamond ring, valued at .£25. Business people in town or country who will assist in the sale of tickets are requested to write to Mr. Sutherland, whose address is advertised -in this issue, together with particulars of tho prize list and an application form for tickets by mail. j
