Their Excellencies the Governor and Countess of Liverpool will in all probability remain in residence in Auckland till the middle of May, when they will return to the Government House in Wellington. A Press Association from Palmerston North states that Dr. Barnett, the late Dr. Martin's successor, has volunteered', and will join the Twenty-sixth Reinforcements. . . It was announced recently by the Commonwealth Navy Department that Commodore Henderson, the officer in charge at Garden Island, Sydney, will shortly rejoin the seagoing branch of the service. ' Captnin J. C. T. Glossop, late of H.M.A.S. Sydney, .-will take' charge of Garden Island. Those wh.o are mentioned in Sydney as likely, to receive appointments, to the Tipper House of the New South Wales Legislature include Sir Herbert Maitland, Messrs. J. S. T. M'Gowen, R. D. Meagher, T. Waddell. J. M. Dodd (Gundagaft, H. Y. Braddon, P. T. Taylor, and Neville Mayman, and Dr. Wall (Coogee). Lately Acting-Judge and Registrar of the District Court, Samoa, Mr. W. H. Woodward has returned to Auckland. He has received permission from the Administrator to re-enlist for active service.- ' ■

A veteran of the Indian Mutiny and the Maori wars died on Monday in the person of Mr. Soloman Reid, says the Auckland "Star." - Mr. Reid, who was born in Belfast 83 years ago. od the Royal Engineers/for service in India and fought through the Mutiny campaign, being present at the relief of Lucknow. After tho trouble had been sottled he went to Australia and assisted in the work of laying.out the city of Melbourne. Later ho came to New Zealand, and fought through the Waikato War. The gold fever tben seized him, and he participated in the rushes to the Thames and the West Coast. Subsequently he returned to Auckland and established a grain and produce business in Khyber Pass, retiring into private life some years ago. He was for many years secretary and president of the Imperial Association. ■ and also took a keen interest in church work. He leaves three sons, Captain W. Reid, now serving under the Admiralty in the war zone, Mr. J. T. Reid, of Invercargill, and Mr. R. T. Reid, of Waikino, and thrpe daughters. His wife pre-deceased him "in 1910.' Heart failure was the cause of death, which" came unexpectedly at Helcnsville.

Mr. C. H. Edwards has been appointed chief savage of the' Napier Savage Club. Mr. John Castle, of Wellington South, has received a cable message from London announcing the fact that Mr. Ewart Gordon Anderson has jrst taken his degree in medicine.. Mr. Anderson served his apprenticeship with Mr. Castle and afterwards qualified as a pharmaceutical chemist. His parents lived in some time, but are now residonts of Nelson. The Otago "Times" records the death of Mr. Jonu Angus, manager of the Now Zealand and Australian Land Company, at tho age of 6S years. Mr. Angus was, born in ; Scotland, and , in his early days received a sound training in one of the leading banking institutions in Scotland. Ho camo to New Zealand in 1874, and from a date shortly after his arrival—for a period of over forty years —he was jconnocted with the New Zealand and lustralian Laiid Company. For a number of years Mr. Angus was employed in connection with the Clydevale Estate, but the greatest part of his business lifo was spent in the offico of tho company in LHmedin, and on the death of Mr. Thomas Brydone, tho . superintendent of the company, he took charge of the business. Mr. Angus was prominently associated with the Otago Agricultural aud Pastoral Association, in which he filled, with great success, tiio office of honorary treasurer for vory many years. ,-

Pastor M. W. P. Lascelles, who lias been appointed a commissioner to the Y.M.C.A. in France, bas had a varied career. The soil of.Mr. A. R. W. Lascelles, barrister, ho was born in South India, and was educated at the Napier Grammar School. After leaving school ho was for four years ma solicitor's office, and, leaving this, he was for twenty years an auctioneer and land and estate agent in the Hawke's Bay district. For ten years ho filled the position of Deputy Official .Assignee, and for a similar period was agent for tho Public Trustee at Napier. Ho has been a Jiistico of the Peace for twentyeight years. Ho was a. member of the Napier Borough, Council and ohairman of tho Public Works Commrbtoo, Deputy-Mayor, a member of the Napier Licensing Committee, and chairman of tho Clive River Board. At Hasungs he was chairman of the Board of Directors of the Y.M.C.A., chairman of tho Hawke's Bay No-License League, and ho was then and still is a member oE the National Committee of . the Y.M.C.A. Ho lias boon a local preacher for thirty-two years and a. Sunday School superintendent for thirty years, and is iv member of the oxcoutive of the' Baptist Union. He was pastor of tho Petono 'Church for nineteen months. In going to France Mr. Lascplles will pay. all his own .expenses, and will receive no salary. He will be accompanied by his son, Mr. _ Arthur Lascelles, who has been appointed a fiold secrotary to the Y.M.C.A. in France.
