A' Press Association message from Sydney last night states that Sir Ernest Shackleton was accorded a civic reception nt the Sydney Town Hall on his arrival. Chaplain-Captain Segrief, who re-' turned with the hospital ship Marama, will proceed to the front as chaplain to tho 24th Reinforcements. Mr. R. A. Howie was yesterday morning admitted as a solicitor of tho Supreme Court by Mr. Justice Stringer, on tho motiou of Mr. Dunu. Mr. Alex. M'Minn, tho well-known journalist, of Auckland, and at one timo of Carterton, recently suffered a partial breakdown in health, and has found it necessary to take absolute rest for.atime. Mr. M'Minn, who is in his seventy-fifth year, will go to To Aroha. to recuperate. About 180 people, representing -the Wellington staff of the D.1.C., assembled in the firm's tearooms on Monday evening to bid farewell to Mr. E. T. Doddroll, the store superintondeut, who is leaving for Gisborno tomorrow to take over tho management of Adair Bros. The local manager, Mr. William Simm, referred to tho Joss tho firm was sustaining in the departure of Mr. Doddrell. Ho would be a very difficult man to replace, ho said, and" had tilled the position of superintendent with marked ability from tho company's point of view, and had always exhibited groat tact and consideration in preserving harmony amongst tho members of the staff. On behalf of the staff, bo presented Mr. Doddrell with a handsome double dinner sot, a tea set, and a breakfast set, accompanying tho saino with tho host wishes for his future happiness and prosperity. On behalf of tho lirm, Mr. Simm handed Mr. Doddroll a cheque for £25, and presented bis wife with a handsome drophcad sowing machine. Mr. Doddroll suitably Teplied- Tho Hev. Mr. John Carroll died: at Otaki Hospital ou Sunday afternoon, after a long illness. He -was tho youngest son of the late Mr. Michael Carroll, of Gillospics, South AVcetland, an 3 recently came from Hokitika, whoro ho was well known and highly respected. Ho leaves three sisters—Mrs. T. Dun.no (Palmerslon North).' Mrs. P. M'Mahon (.Khan--dallah), aud Mrs. C. Sloane (Porirua) —and ono brother (Mr. Michael Car-, roll, of South AVostlaiid. Ho was'buried at Porirua alongside his' father. Mr. Frank Cooks, who has bocn on tho staff of the New Zealand Press Association for somo years, has, for health reasons, resigned his appointment. Mr. If. H. Morgan, sub-editor of the "New Zealand Times," is about Lo outer the Press Association service. Private R. F. Pamnt, of tho 23rd Reinforcements, was tendered a farewell "social" by the membors of tho I Gear Fire Brigade, Petono. Captain Parrant, of the brigade, who occupied tho chair, presented , tho guest with nn illuminated, wristlet watch, and complimoJited him on his patriotism in volunteering for service at the early age of twenty. Ho also mentioned that Private Parrant had succeeded_ in qualifying for tho brigade's efficiency badge.
