The fortnightly mooting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held last evening, Mr. ¥. Meadowcroft presiding. Subscriptions for tho two weeks ending March 18 wero acknowledged as under:—Messrs. J. Ilott and R. Pearson, £1 Is. each; Miss Paul, £1; Messrs. E. Collie, Ltd., Stewart Dawson and Co., Magnus, Sanderson, 10s. 6d. each; Messrs. W. H. Field, M.P., V. R. Meredith, 10s. each; Mesdames Hales, Hall, Dr. W. J. Hislop, Messrs. iJ. J. Curtis, A. Dunn, D. M'Crae, ! Jones and Co., Miller and Ahearn, Jooston and Muirio, R. M. A letter was received from tho lion, secretary of tho Royal Society for tho Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, London, requesting that the Now Zealand S.P.O.A. start a fund for tho purposo of building a hospital for wounded and siok horses of the New Zealand Division. It was estimated that the institution would cost about £6000. A suggestion was made in the letter that each district or city might raise enough to build a ward, which could bo named after such district or city. The writer of the letter had just spent about a year near the front, and stated that although tho horses wero treated well, they had an exceptionally hard time, and tho money was to bo-utilised for building an institution in which they could be better looked after. Tho fund, as far as New Zealand., is concerned, is for the artillery horses, as it is -understood that there aro no New Zealand cavalry Tiorses in France. It is hoped that the many animal lovers in New Zealand will donate to the fund. Arrangements are being made for the collection of the donations, whioh will in the meanwhilo be forwarded to the S.P.C.A. here. The inspector reported that lio had successfully dealt with ten cases of cruelty to animals., One man had been convicted and fined £5 and costs for ill-treating a horse.
