A demonstration of the effectiveness of stump blasting with tho Atlas Farm High Explosive, arranged by Mr. D. A. Hamilton, assistant-manager of .Messrs. Gollins Proprietary, Ltd., was 'given by the company's expert, Mr. T. J. Doolin, on Mr. Russell's property recently. Mr. Doolin stated that the company had been experimenting in the endeavour to find an explosive which would prove efficient and economical for agricultural work. Their research had culminated in the present farm explosive, which is made up in useful cartridge form, and is claimed to be absolutely ■safe to handle. The first proposition tackled was the biggest stump in the paddock—an "old man" totara. Seven cartridges of the . explosive were used, and the resultant "shot" proved entirely satisfactory. For the next demonstration a maire tree, 18 inches in diameter and approximately 20 feet high, was selected. The maire was split to fragments. The explosive has a lateral as well as a vertical effect, and cleans out the roots to their' farthest point. To take out tho mairo by manual labour it was estimated that the cost would have been at least £1, whereas removal by the means stated cost approximately 3s. fJd.
