The Victoria College District Court of Convocation sat last night to discuss certain recommendations of the New Zealand University Board ol Studies regarding entrance and degrees examinations. . chairman (Mr. i - R, Fleming) presided. On the motion- of Mr. G. jEogben at was resolved: "That the higher leaving certificate should exempt the holder from sitting for the matriculation examination, the' University charging such feo for matriculation as it deems Professor Hunter' initiated a discussion on the resolution passed by tho Board of Studies, that British subjects only should be eligible for University or other scholarships. Ho considered • that this was an improper, stand for any University to take. In the course of discussion it was pointed out that the resolution '.would aflftect not only Germans and- other aliens now "enemies; but also subjects -of countries Sow "our Allies/ ' Finally, it was re-, solved, oil - the -motion •••of • Professor Hunter"That this court thinks it'unwise for the University to bind itself to exclude all persons not of British nationality." Tho Board of Studies' recommendations regarding matriculation examinations were, discussed. at length, and resolutions. were carried, suggesting amendments in details. Regarding degree courses and the recommendation "That the B.A. and B.Sc. degreos.be retained,as separate degrees, the B.Sc. to ho confined to soicntific subjects," it was resolved on the motion of Professor Hunter, "That the court has not sufficient information before it to enable it to express an opinion." It was, however, resolved later, on the motion of Professor' Ivirk: "That if the B.A. and B.Sc. degrees be retained as separate degrees, the 13.A. shall be a general degree making provision for-science subjects not : less liberal than those of the present statute." At the instance of Professor, Kirk, the court reaffirmed its previous reso-lution-asking for- the abolition of the system of external examinations.
