NOTES AND COMMENTS

IBr GleScob.l

Tho Waipa Eaolng Club' 6 annual meeting will take place at To Awamutu to-day. The meeting promises to be the most successful yet held by the Northern Club, as good aceptanoes have been received for all the events, and class is well represented. The Highden horses, Panmure and Idle Talk, are entered for the 'Marton and Wairarapa meetings at New Yeax, but they ,are most likely to be seen out at the first-named gathering. Local stables are well represented in the Nursery Handicap at Tauherenikau on January 1. H. Telford has engaged Association and Street Singer, J. W. Lowe has Cooing, C. Pritchard Trentham Bose, Pupil, and Arituka,. and H. Kingan Pervolo. The Summer Meeting of the Wellington liaoing Club will be held on Saturday, Monday, and Wednesday, January 20, 22, and 24. The. programme is the best that has yet been issued for a Wellington Meeting, and does not contain any event of less value than 200 6ovs; Owners should note that nominations for all events closo on Monday at 9 p.m. with Mr. A. E. Whyte (secretary).

At EUerslie on Thursday morning Sasanof was slackened out over seven furlongs, with Clieloma to bring him home over the last six, the Melbourne Cup winner easily ' defeating his companion, and running the journey in lmin. 32 2-5 sec., the last six furlonga taking lmin. 20.1-ssec. Sasanof did his task in good style, and it was a really pleasing effort. W. H. Thomson, in charge of llaro Antony, passed through here yesterday on his way to Ellerslie. Though the traok watchers and followers of publio form will not have the blaok horse, Thomson is, of the opinion that he will run a good.race, as at Biocarton, in the spring, he -was suffering from the effeots of a vice he had developed, but steps have now been taken to cure this.

Asfor, who raced prominently with Bst. 91b on his'back.in the Flying Stakes at Feilding, reads well in the Fitzherbert Handicap at Awapuni on Boxing Day. The Hawera horse -is understood to be a sure' runner. ■. :

There has been a report published lately to the effect that A. Oliver had given the military authorities .£250 to transfer him to the Flying Corps. The report is ,entirely without foundation, and Oliver knows nothing about it. He would certainly like to get transferred into the Flying Corps, but he is prepared to go wherever the authorities wish.

Ihe tracks at Awapuni are very fast at the present time and a night or two's rain is badly needed before the Cup Meeting;

Each ballot draws on the sporting list, ft i becoming the general opinion that if the war does not end 6oon it mil end racing. The well-known Opaki ,trainer, P. M'Gralh," who is at present on a visit to Melbourne, has "been called up, as has J. Farmer, who has a bi<" team in work at Mar toil. Jockeys w" Ferris, Alan M'Donald. W, Chaafe, R. Gilbert, and L. Graham,' well known hurdlo riders, are also among those called up.

Owners are reminded that acceptances tor the Stratford Meeting close on Wednesday next.

A peculiarity .about the Yaldhurst Auckland Cup candidates. The Toff and Wishful; ,is that'they are equal favourites for the Auckland event. Both' are owned by Mr. G. L. Stead and apparently both are to take their place in the two miles on Boiine Day. No one thinks the light-weight is the equa] of The Ttiff over two miles; and the support accorded wishful was forthcoming solely on the assumption that he would be the only representative of the stable on the day. Mr. G. L. Stead would seem to have chafed hie mind, and "both horses will dow'see the post.. It seems strange that the two-year-old races all over the Dominion are faring badly this.summer. The Auckland pr<£ gramme is the only one that has drawn •a. good entry of youngstera, and those article l ° ent?rc(l aro mo3tl y ths J °cal

The: Blonjiaim sportsman, Mr. A. Hore to engaged Parifprm, Heeltap, and Imaribbon at the Wairarapa Meeting, but they are not entered for any other of the.holiday fixtures. Probably they'will como over for the Tauherenikau Meetfcfture ra ? aui ". fl>r the Wellington Cup

A Press Association telegram from Pal. mereton North states that owing to an the ..names of Lady Black, Sat. lib., was omitted from the acceptances for the Fitzherbert Handicap, to meeting" 11 ° f tbe Mana ™tu
