STATE SCHOOLS CLOSED SOME INTERESTING GATHERINGS The State schools throughout the Wellington district went into mid-summer recess yesterday. _ On such occasions the spirits of the children are wonderfully buoyant. Gloomy faces and sulky dispositions are undiscoverablo among those that look forward so eagerly to a change from the beneficial, monotony of school life. As usual the occasion was taken to present tho successful children with thoir proficiency, competency, and attendance certificates at. the different schools, which were attended by the members of tho respective 6chool committees, TE ARO A list of certificates published in yesterday's Dominion', under tho • heading of To <Aro School, should have been under the heading of Clyde Quay School. Certificates won by Scholars of tho Te Aro School and the Mitchelltown School, which is run in conjunction with the Te Aro School, are;— PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATES. ISLAND BAY The breaking-up ceremony of the Islaud Bay School took placo yesterdav. Mr, E. A. Wright, M.P., presented the prizes, proficiency and competency, certificates, also certificates for attendance, addressing to each of the winners a few well chosen words of praise. Tho roll of the old boys lighting for the Empire was called, and out of respect for tho memory of old boys—A. J. Hosie, W. E. Hosie, and H. M. Sinclair—who have laid down their lives for their King and oountry, all present stood in/silcnco. A. letter signed by tho dux. Alec Haslam, and also tho nest three prize-winners— Nola Iviroy, Ella Eobb, and Evelyn Mason—also by tho headmaster, Mr. Haslam, and tho chairman of. tho committee, Mr. Shorland, to tho Et. Hon. D. Lloyd George, expressing admiration, for his determination to carry the war to a triumphant issue, was a featuro of the proceedings. After Mr. Wright was thanked for his donation of prizes, tho ceremony was brought to a close by. the National Anthem being sung on the new property lately acquired for extra play-iug-ground spaced to which thoso assembled had adjourned. ROSENEATH AND HAT AIT Al Since last Christmas the operations of the Rosencat'h School have been extended to include a side-school at Hataitai. That fact, and the growth of the district was referred to at the "break-ups" o? the two schools by the chairman of the committee, ;Mr. H. Morrison) yesterday morning. The work done during the past twelve months at Eoseneath and since tho now school was established at Hataitai reflected credit on Mr. Robert Darroch and his staff. Tho proficiency, competency, and attendanco certificates were distributed at the functions.
