The High Commissioner's letter_ to' the Minister contains the: following very illuminating paragraph: "A supply of clothing is being sent from this : - office, .and each man is being sent a small money allowance each week. It is not considered advisable to send more than 2s. 6d. at a time, or at the very most 55., as there is nob very much that tho man can buy apart from food, and it is strongly suspected that when the Germans discover that a man has more than a -very smallamount of money, prices arc raised against him threefold or even more, and ho is thus very soon fleeced of all ■ that be has.".

"The first letter .Jo reach the" Do. partment from a member of the K.Z.E.F. in acknowledgement of communications se«t by the High Commissioner to prisoners of war in Germany, comes from 12/693 Corporal W. Best, Ist Auckland Battalion. Corporal Best states that the bread sent through Switzerland has to come to him in good condition, and is a welcome change from the brown bread he had been getting.' The parcels containing shaving toilet outfit and weekly : "supply; of food and clothing had not reached him at time of writing, but it is hoped ; that they have done so ere now (September 26), as he states that when he was taken prisoner he had no hat or overcoat on. Corporal Best's peoplelive in Otahuhu." The Defence Minister 'has received cable advice from England as follows: "Tho Government of Germaiiy have' announced that they have decided not to admit parcels for prisoners of war in Germany between December 15 and December 25. Fear, therefore, parcels not posted in time to reach this country before beginning of December will not reach destination before Christmas."
