DIRECTOR OF ORDNANCE STORES

$ : TWO NEW APPOINTMENTS. Captain T. M'Cristell, Quartermaster at Trentham, has -been appointed to succeed Major James O'Sullivan as Director of Ordnance Stores at Buckle Street, whilst the latter officer assumes the duties of Inspector of Ordnance Stores throughout the Dominion. Captain M Cristell, who was adjutant of the 17th (Rualiine) Regiment, and who has for some time past been Quartermaster of the military camp at Trentham, served in the Tirah Valley (North-west India) campaign, organised in 1997 by Sir William Lockhart against the 'Afridis, in which the famous storming of the heights of Darghai was a memorable episode. He ha's the Tirah medal with two clasps. Later on, in 1900-2, ho served in the South African campaign, being engaged in operations in the Transvaal and Orange River Colony between November, 1900, and May, 1902, and for his services was dccorated with the Queen's medal with two clasps. Captain M'Cristell will take up his now duties on Monday. Major O'Sullivan has been in the Defence service for 371 years. Ho joined the old Armed Constabulary, and remained in the ranks until iBBo, when lie was transferred to the Defence Stores Department. He worked there until 1899, and on tho day the Fifth Contingent for South Africa was mobilised, ho was appointed to succeed Captain Anderson (then suffering from a severe illness) as 'Defence Storekeeper. His duties in those strenuous times included tho equipping of every contingent (all mounted men) for South Africa, besides attending to the camps, riflo meetings, and volunteers throughout the country. In January, 1907, ho was made Director of Ordnance Stores, and given a captain's commission, and in September, 1911, ho was promoted to bo major, and in July, 1914, was mado an Assistant Quarter-master-General.
