RAILWAYMEN'S WAGES
. MpVE FOR AN INCREASE. V. At the last meeting of the Thorndou Branch of the Kailway'men a resolution was carried instructing the secretary to circularise all branches with the object of convening a confercnce of representatives to discuss wages and conditions iii the service. Judging by the replies already to hand, it is anticipated that the branches will unanimously support holding the conference, whioh should take place at' an early date. The present minimum of 9s. per day has been in operation for the past four years. The men now consider that the pay is inadequate owing to the abnormally high cost of living. Repeated efforts by the ffixecntive Council to secure an improvement have been met by a refusal at the hands of the Minister and Department.
