NOTES AND COMMENTS

IBs Glencob.l It is expected that the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting, to be held on the Hutt Park Trotting track next 'Friday, will be the most, successful yet held by the club. A large number of southern stables will bo represented, and the leading drivers will air have a seat in the big event. The new track is of perfect sliaps, and is fenced similarly to tho Metropolitan track at Addihgton. Secretary It. W. Short has all arrangements well in hand. Special train arrangements have been made for the day, and the time and departure will ,be advertised next week. Though Garettu (Charlemagne ll—Spun Goid). has already won four races, none of them have been 'of the value. of .£3O to the winner. The bay mare is bred well enough to compete in better company ,than she meets at. tlic Otago country meeting*. Seddul Bahr will not be seen out at the, Wellington meeting. Ho is to bo given a few days' spell in the paddock, and will later on be taken to the Hawera and Taranaki meetings. Gang Awa' (Provocation—Gold Cord), who was recently purchased by Mr: F. S. Easton, of Foxton, has been handed to F. Tilley to train. • The death occurred at Wanganui last week of Dr. R. C. Earle, one of the oldest members of., the Wanganui Jockey Olub, and for many years honorary judge and alco president of the club. - In his day he owned and bred many horses. One of his sons, Dr. Maurice Earle, is at present a steward of the AYanganui Jockey Club. At Whangarei on Thursday J. O'Shea 1 rode the first two winners, and thus drew level with B: Deeley, each having ridden thirty winners this season. When Genevieve .(O'Shea) scored in the Kensington Stakes, she. defeated a very warm order in Coleraine. The Highden team for the'Trentham meeting will consist of five horses. They will arrive on Monday in charge of G. Price. At the-Tapanui meeting, on Wednesday, J. Olsen rode four winners. Vascorini, a half-sister to Playmate, won the District Hack race at Tapauui on Wednesday. Tile Porirua team for Trenthain will, be railed over on Monday. It will consist of twelve horses. A good field will contest the Trial Stakes at Trentham, and the seven furlongs event promises to 1m particularly hard to win. Last year Croesus scored, and later on won the Kelbum Plate, four furlongs. . Tliere' was a dead heat between three horses, viz., Mandina, Graveina, and Aberdonia, in the Muswellbrook Handicap, at Muswellbrook (N.S.W.), on December 22. Mandiua won. in the run-off.: At Trentham on Thursday morning the Multifid gelding Chortle showed that there is very little wrong with him by reeling off a half-mile on the tan track in 471 sec. ■ There has been a rearrangement in the riding •of Welcome Nugget. in the, Wellington Cup, and W. "Bell will now take the seat, while A. Reed will be up on Bee., . ■ . 1 ' limpet has .been running consistently of late, but she has -always had to put up with minor places. The well-bred Porirua mare has' been entered for the Trial Plate at Trentham, and no doubt sho will take her place in the field. ■ L. Wilson, for many years first horseman to T. Qiiinlivan's stables, .has severed his connection with the Hastings trainer, and-will in future ride as a free lance. . . ' The acceptances received for the Wellington meeting are. highly satisfactory, and'a very successful' meeting should open on Thursday next. Seventeen owners have signified their satisfaction with' the Cup Handicap, and. fourteen in the Telegraph Handicap. The principal defections from the Cup are at the tail of the: handicap, and all the well-fancied candidates have stood their ground. Balboa is to start iii the.Cup in preference to the Waterloo Stakes. First Glance is now top-weight in the Cup with 9st. 21b., and at her best the Riccarton mare must be dangorous. . At Wiiuiatui last month she was successful on the first day with 9st. 61b., and on the second was only beaten by a head under the crusher of lOst. 41b.. 'Sflub still continues to be ■ a warm order, and will no doubt hold his position until the barrier rises. The big acceptance of eighteen has been received for the Nursery Handicap. This will show the wisdom of making the stake for a two-year-old handicap a good one. In giving .£4OO the club ;cted i wisely, and it may bo mentioned that this is the biggest stake for a two-year-old: handicap in the Dominion.
