A SEVERE EARTHQUAKE. WHAT HAPPENED AT RABAUL. Molbourne, January 14. Senator Pearce (Minister of Defence) has bften advised that tlio earthquake at Rabaul on January 4 caused severe and numerous landslides. Houses were shaken down at Toma, Rabaul the Imrbour rose ton feet. Numbers of buildings and the jetty were badly strained.'Sydney, January 14. The seismographs at Riverview_ have recorded an earthquako of great intensity, 500 miles north-east of Darwin. The shock is the severest yet experienced. A "BULLETIN" ARTIST'S SUICIDE. OBSESSED BY HALLUCINATIONS. Sydney, January 14. At the inquest on Alfred Vincent, the "Bulletin' 1 artist, who committed suicide on Decembor 7, his wife gave evidence that deceased had been suffering fo* some tiine from nervous troubles. He was obsessed by the _ hallucination that he had been shot in the throat, and thought the public disliked his work. He was greatly worried about the war. A verdict was returned that deceased died from a self-inflicted wound during, temporary mental derangement: ITEMS IN BRIEF. GOLD YIELD IN NEW SOUTH WALES. (Rec.
