Mr. Robert Lee, ex-Chairman of the Wellington Education Board, returned to Jsew Zealand by the Turaltina (which arrived at Auckland on Saturday),.after being absent for about sixteen months on a holiday trip to the Old Country. Mr. Lee is expected to arrive from the north this'afternoon.

Mr. Harold Beauchamp, chairman of tho Board of Directors of the Bank of Now Zealand, and head of the firm of W. M. Bannatyne aud Co., received a cablegram yesterday morning that his sod, Lieutenant Leslie Beauchamp, had beon killed in France. . The deceased officer, who was 21 years of age, only left Wellington for London on ■ Christinas Evo last by the ludrabarah, intending to apply at once for a commission in tho British Army. 'Within a fortnight after landing he had secured his commission in the Bth Battalion,of the South Lancashire Regiment. Ho studied hard, and whilst in training as an oflicor helped to train and get used to the command of men. It is not supposed that ho had been very long in tho firing-lino, and it/ is moro than probable that he met his death during the recent British advance on tho La Bassee-Loos lino, where the fighting has been of the severest character experienced during the , war. Lieutenant Beauchamp was a native of Wellington. He was educated at the Wellington Col- | lego and the Waitaki Boys' High School. Before leaving for England lie spent about two years in tho cashier's branch of \V. M. Bannatyne and Co. He war popular with all who knew him.

The death occurred at Dunedin yesterday afternoon of Mr. T. Cole, of the firm of Messrs. Colo and Springer, undertakers, aged 70 years. He was Mayor of Dunedin in 1910, and at the .time of bis death was a member of tha City Council. Hewas Mayor of Caversham on two occasions. Death was duo to apoplosy.—Press Association.

The twentyfivo wounded New Zealanders who arrived in Sydney last week are due here by tho Maitai to-day.

Captain and' Mrs. Mercer, of Wanganui, are at present staying at the Grand Hotel, preliminary to leaving for the Old Country, where Captain Mercer intends to rejoin liis old regiment.

Trooper Chas. Thompson, a member of the mounted section of the 3rd Reinforcements, died in Wellington on Monday. He was invalided back to New Zealand from Egypt, arriving here by tho Wimmera,. and had since been an inmate of Dunedin Hospital. He was""'on his way to Auckland in search of health, when he was again taken ill, and' succumbed suddenly to his sickness at the Victoria MilitaryHospital. He will be. buried to-day, with full military honours.
