NOTES AND COMMENTS

TBr Qlencoi.l

The annual meeting of the HoroTrliemm Racing Club will bo hold to-day. Some years back when "reduction", was carried the meeting lost its permit, but last year this was restored. Wellington patrons will be able to obtain excursion fares by the Now Plymouth and Napier mail trains leaving at 8.20 and 9.8 a.m., and levin will be reached in pleftty of time to see all tho races. The return journey can be made by tlie New Plymouth express. Good fields are engaged in all the events, and with the Otaki and Wanganui form to guide them, backers should not find it a difficult matter to sort out a winner. .Amongst the. runners in the S'curry are Flying Spur, who went with Nones in the Wanganui .Guineas for half a mile. This should be a sufficiently good trial for a i Scurry ' at Levin. ' ' • ( ■ For tho Levin Hack Handicap, six furlongs, the runuers include Sir Saracen, 7st. 21b. The Trenfcbain horse was finishing fast behind Happiness and Mann at Otaki on' Tuesday, and the extra furlong to-day should suit him. In the M'Donald Memorial, sis furlongs, Peronilla, Bst. 111b;, will be much in demand, but the higher soale of weights may not suit lien Tangiwai, Bst. 81b., will be ridden by L. Nodder, and he may bei cxpected to do a lot better for such a strong horseman. . He was once credited witli winning'a mile at Auckland in lmin. 39 '1-osec. Pavlova, 9st. (lb., is top weight in the Cup. Tho bay mare is coming en fast, but it is very doubtful if she is able to concede Immer 301b. With Square Deal, Bene, and Master Moutoa penalised, the Martian filly will no doubt be much sought. after, with only 7st. 21b. to carry. Trentham opinion is that the two races she had at Otaki will work a big difference in her, as sho has been loafing in her .tasks at headquarters. Kongora, 7st., has been off tho scene for somo time, but as she showed up well behind Mystified and Arlington at Otaki, it can be assumed that she is nearly right again, and if Tuesday's race has improved her, tlie JJoutere Hack to-day should be to her liking. Another runner likely to. be well fancied is Bronk Delaval, 7st. 41b. • , A copy of "The Racing Handbook" has reached this office. It is a neat little work, compiled by Mr. Claud R. Whitcombe, or Auckland, and is intended to 'supply to the sportiug public full and recent information of Tacing and trotting. Tho programme for the Spring Meeting of the Wellington Racing Club has been printed. It is similar to that issued last ye&r, and there has been no reduction in stakes. • Tho Wellington Handicap, one mile and a quarter, is worth 400 sovs., and the Pearce Handicap, one mile, 300 sovs., while, the Champion Plate carries 800 sovs., including a cup valued at 100 sovs. Entries close on October 11 at 9 p.m. Second forfeits for the Wellasley Stakes must be declared to-morrow. „ To-morrow Secretary Hortland, of the Auckland Racing Club, will receive entries for the principal event> at the Summer Meeting. G. Scobie, formerly private trainer to Mr. Harve.v Patterson, arrived from Sydney by tko Manuka yesterday. ; He' is just getting well after having broken his collarbone while schooling a horse at Caulfield, and during his enforced retirement he is attending to some business affairs in Christchnrch. The Ashhurst-Pohungina Raoiug Club, formerly the leading one-day club in the Dominion, is out with its programme for its' animal meeting on November 21. The club will make its re-entry into the racing arena with a big day's sport, and the sum of Jifi'lo is to be given in stakes. AH classes of horses are catered for. There are three open events, the principal of which is the Ash hurst Cup, of 1,10 sovs., run oyer a ten furlongs course. In addition, there are five events for hacks, including the Maiden Stakes and Hack Hurdles. No pains liav? been spared by the officers of the club in getting- the grounds in order for the meeting, and in this connection it should be notrd that the.turn into the straight has been banked. Owners and trainers should note that nominations for all events closo on Tuesday, November 2, with Secretary A. W. Trass. La Penna has been seralc'ii'd for the Epsom and Metropolitan Hnndciaps— Press Association.
