WHITE ISLAND DISASTER

A CLAIM. FOR COMPENSATION. By Telegraph.—Press Association, Auckland, September 29. Mr. Justice Stringer has forwarded the judgment of the Arbitration Court ill the claim for compensation brought by the widow of one of the victims of the White Island disaster, which occurred on September 9 or 10, 1914. Plaintiff's husband was employed quarrying crude sulphur. The judgment concluded as follows: —"All that was definitely known is that deceased; and all tho other living souls on the island were engulfed or swept, away by some groat natural disturbance, but as to when, and where, or exactly how, deceased met his death was absolutely not known, or from which any legitimate inference could be drawn. Wo regret we are forced to the conclusion that plaintiff has been wholly unablo to satisfy the onus wliich ■rests upon her and she cannot succeed in the action."

A meeting of the Women's Branch of the National Reserve has been convened by the Mayor of tho Hutt, Mr. Baldwin, and will take place in tlie Council Chamber, Lower. Hutt, this evening. Mrs. A. R. Atkinson will speak, and it is hoped that many of the Hutt ladies will take this opportunity of joining the Reserve.
