NEWSPAPER POSTAGE RATES.
PROTEST AGAINST INCREASE. (Rec. September 1, 10 p.m.) ! • -Melbourne, September 1/ . A deputation representing the. leading newspapers of the Commonwealth interviewed Mr. Spence (Federal Post-master-Generol) ■ and protested against the proposed increase on the newspaper postage rates. Amongst other matters, it was pointed out that the newspapers wero an important vehicle for creating and maintaining patriotic opinion, without which a war coul'd not Tie won, and it would benothing short of a calamity if this voliiclo of publio opinion were' hampered. ; Mr. Spence said that tho Government recognised and appreciated to, tlio full tho. assistance the Press had given at tho timo of the 'crisis.' The increased rates woro not lovied for revenuo purSoses, but to put tho Post Office on a usiness basis.. He promised that Cabinet would consider tho .requests of tho deputation. .... ;
