There weTe present at last evening's meeting of tlie Petone Borough Council the Mayor (Mr. J. \V„ M'Ewan) and Councillors List,- Forsyth, Cox, Brocklebank, Anderson, Jones, M'Dougall, MKenzie. Applications from Messrs. H. V. Howe and H. R.Head for space in tie municipal boat-sheds were"grarited, and it was decided to call tenders for the lease for 12 months of a shop in the boat-sited. - An offer from Mr. C. Young to supply two motor chassis of 40 h.p. each for £750, was received and will he considered. The Petono Firo Board drew attention to the condition of iiro plugs, and it was resolved that' certain recommendations . m<tdo by Fire-Superintend-ent Leppor should be given effect to. The. Taumarumii Patriotic Carnival Committee asked the support of tlie council in approaching Parliament witli a view, to the Gaming and Lotteries Act not being enforced during • tie present crisis, in. connection with art unions, tho. proceeds of which are for patriQtic purposes only. In tlie discussion which followed, Councillor M'Kenzie thought that, the Government ought to be commended iii enforcing tlie Act and thus. stopping wbat was - becoming overdone. Councillors Anderson, List, Brocklobanlc, and Cos thought tlie council should support tbe request from Taumarunui, and tho council decided to adopt this course, tie Mayor expressing tbe opinion that if tlie' Government bad _ taken charge of tlie Wounded ■Soldiers'.Fund itself, the present costly niotliod of raising funds would not have been commenced. Quotations from tie A.M.P. Society for insuring men on active.service were received, and are to be .filed for reference. . 'A resolution to borrow £4000 by way of overdraft was carried.; - ' A petition praying that part of tbe icrougli of Petone should not be included in the rateable area of the Hutt River Board was read and approved. Counoillor M'Kenzie tabled the following notice of motion:—"That, it be a remit to the next Municipal Conference; that tbe Government be asked to introduce Bill to Parliament to amend the Municipal Corporations Act, 1908, and other amendments in the direction of' granting local authorities (boroughs particularly) power to take over and maintain all private streets from" which rates aro collected, and that were formed prior to the passing of tho Municipal Corporations Act retiring all roads in boroughs to be of no less width than (56ft. Messrs. W. H. Hall and J. H. Wifc liams, plumbers, wore appointed by the council in connection with tho drainage works. The conditions in this respect are: Tho councdl will- do the work for the actual cost plus 5 per cent.; the amount_ to be repayable in ten halfyearly instalments at G per cent.; and agreements may be entered into at, any time.. • '
