A TARIFF DEBATE
BY ACCOUNTANT'STUDENTS. . Tlie joint debate between flie'Ciiristchurch ;and _ Wellington Accountant Students' Societies -was held on. Friday night in the Accountants' Chambers, before a large audience. Mr. Ernest W. .Hunt, president of the Wellington Society, was in the cliair. The subject for the debate was "That it is in the Best Interests of the Dominion thfit' a High Protective Tariff bo enforced against Foreign Imports." The affirmative side ■was token by the Christchurch Society, who'were represented.by Messrs. Franklyn, Flanagan, and Westerman, and tho negative side by the Wellington Society, who were represented by Messrs. Appleton.'Anton, and Pattrick. .Tho Christchurch Society advanced tlio arguments that the protective, tariff would iiot only inoreaso the national revenue,. but tliat it would exclude to ; a large extent' the. imports from foreign countries,' which were increasing at an alarming rate, and that it would foster the infant industries of New Zealand as well as provido diversity of employment for the people of the Dominion. They also showed that distinct and de-' cide'd advantages would accrue to the Empire as'a whole' as a result of the tariff. .. ' . The Wellington Society in rebutting the arguments advanced bv the affirmative side, stated that foreign trado was in the best interests of the Empire, and that the protective tariff would increase the cost of living without excluding the foreign importations. They contended that the tariff would alienate the goodwill of our Allies, and that it would not enhance the future development of Netf Zealand, which was linked up inseparably with our primary products. . Tho judge, Mr. .M. Myers, awarded the debate to the Christcfiurch',Accountant Students' Society,,and gave a.very able criticism of the .debate generally. He was accorded a hearty voto of thanks on the motion of Mr. Appleton seconded by Mr. Franklyn.
