POSITION IN WELLINGTON. ' In tho course of the annual roport of the Council of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts it is stated that during the year a joint committee was appointed by the Academy and the New Zealand- Institute of Architects to inguire into the matter of art braining in. Wellington. This committee paid several visits to the Technical School while the work of the classes was in progress, and' the system of instruction was explained by the Director and his staff, file committee, reporting the result cf its investigation, expressed, the opinion that the system of training generally was a good one, depending for its results on the quality of the teaching staff, and in the case of elementary art subjects on the method of instruction and inspection in the primary schools. "At present the inspection of the primary school work is left entirely in tlie hands of the regular- inspectors of the Education Department,'"and-in'the committee's opinion, an additional inspector or peripatetic instructor should; be appointed from the staff of the Technical School, whose duty it would be to exercise a general supervision over the primary school art work. "The comifcittee considered that free place pupils in the secondary schools should bo allowed to attend the art ■classes at the Technical School, thus avoiding a- serious break in the art training at a, time when the interest of the student recently been awakened. As regards the building, ; the arrangement, lighting, ventilation, apparatus, etc., are not such as are calculated to be productive- of the best results of the .efforts of either staff or students.. "The report of the committee concluded .with a strong recommendation to the councils of their respective bodies ; to apply for representation on the Board of Managers of the Technical School. The report was adopted, and, as a contribution .(within the , means of the Academy) would secure -representation, the .council have taken - steps''in . this direction." , Messrs.
