NATIONAL RESERVE
RAILWAY FIELD ENGINEERS. The' Wellington branch of the New Zealand Railway National Reserve Field Engineers held their usual weekly drill on Thursday. After a short course of musketry the members adjourned to'the Railway Social Hall for the purpose of saying good-bye ,to one of their instructors, Lieut. It, R. Gow, who is going to tli© front. Captain'o.. Meek presided. Apology for non-attendance 1 ' was received from Mr.! G. A. Troup, chairman of the Raijway Executive of the .National Reserve.. ' , Mr. E. A. Dawson proposed the health of the guest, and in doing so . shortly detailed the history of the branch and the cheerful and painstaking ' services which Lieut. Gow had rendered since the inception of the movement > in April last. He mentioned that ; Lieut. Gow bad passed> his examina- ; tion for his King's commission with ; much distinction : he hada brother at . the front who had been wounded, and > iii" spite of family sacrifices, which might well have restrained him from offering u his services, had done so cheerfully. On ' behalf of all ranks ho wished Lieut, p Gow God-spced and a safe return.Captain Meek then-presented Lieut. Lieut. Gow thanked members for their magnificent -gifts, - which he would always treasure. He said he. had only done what lip considered his. duty, and impressed up'oii members the need of attendance, at drill. THE PETONE UNIT, There was an unusually good muster "at last evening's parade of the Petone unit of the National' Reserve, PlatoonSergt. Reeve taking charge. At a general_ meeting l|cld subsequently,' it was intimated that Second Lieut.' Watson had been appointed to a permanent position in the i Defence Department. ; As the executive committee appointed exceeded the number allowed by the regulations, the following were set up to aqt in that capacity : —Messrs. Reeve, Bond, Smith, . Morris, Castle, Senior, and Hay. . Itwas.decided that the new committee be asked to formulate rules and submit same ;to a general meeting of members at a later date.-'
