THE POWER OF DARKNESS.
Sir,—ln your issue of last Saturday's Dominion there appears an account of Mt. Kipling's stirring appeal, entitled "A Call to the-Natioh; or War. Against the Power of Darkness." If over, a patriotic appeal to thoso who call' themselves Britishers should be printed in pamphlet form and cir- ■ . oulated broadcast throughout the Dominions, this should bo, for the real essence of it iefers to those who are shirking their'.duties, and' seem, to'" be,.
Waiting,. as : Mr.' Kipling says, till the worst comes, to tlie worst, when tho nationwill have to bring in a Bill to force to enlist especially those who are now shirking .their duty, to those :who are so: inclined -: to look lightly on the effects of tliis war.'Lotmo plead with them to. 'get.C last' Saturday's copy of TnE Dominion and read: Mr. Kipling's stirring: appeal.' ■ I lave 'used the. word "shirker," but I do nqt refer to those . who have already offered their sendees, and. ha,ve been turned down simply because they have >a few bad teeth or some other defect, .and I may say they are many,; but to those who have no intention/of : enlisting 'and"who. think .they will have just a good time under ■ the Germans as under a'. British ■ sovereign, it is'to'those this appeal is meant for, .-and -myself as a Britisher would like, to ask those so-called shirkers rwbo .have no dependents and no. family, ties, two questions :.! Do they think that: this nation of inhuman beings will be satisfied with" the Bel- : gian coast? y.L say -emphaticaJly : "No," for there must, be'.no,, break in t-lio ;■ coast line" /between' ;I Belgium : and the: Kiel Canal, : ?and yet another question. , Do tfioy think that Germany _ will be j satisfied with an'attack on Servla only? ( Certainly; not.; Most emphatically No. j They' will', march, on if nipt''checked 'and j go through ; the Balkan; States ' as far. | as the Black Sea, Sea.of Marmora, and. ) 'Adriatic ,Sea with the same destruc--tion as appears in' France, Belgium ,and r Poland, and'who will be responsible ; for : : this .'continuous march." Why the shirk- •] ers, who: have, no mother, or family ties to hinder them from doinc their I duty.—l am, etc., , ; •A TRUE BRITISHER. J [This letter, has been condensed.]' j
