STAR BOATING CLUB

The annual report I 'of the Star Boating Club states that tho total membership of the club is now 343, against 367 last, year, and includes 68 who are serving and have served in the Expeditionary Forces. The club's- financial position has improved, and the surplus assets stand at,£2lll 19s. lid., against £2059 15s. 9d. last year. There is, however, a contingent liability of £42 against the cluib for rates. This is £38 more 1 tliau that of previous years, and tho committee has taken up the matter with the City Council. . Regret is expressed ib'y the committee that tho club's objection to the land tax valuation put oil the club's lease was unsuccessful in the Assessment Court. Hitherto the Court had always recognised that the lease, being, for boating purposes only, was-of no marketable value, 1 and assessed on a rental value, which value did not call for the payment of land tax. This year, howover, the Courtr-a new one—viewed the matter differently and assessed at £2860. hence the tax, which the club was advised it had no option but to pay. City rates were struck on tho values fixed by the Court, and the increase is such that the club cannot pay it. Application for relief is therefore being made to the City Council.
