(Continued from Page 2) In Aid of the Distressed. A very successful sale of work, organised by'little Janet Atkinson, was held at Wadestown yesterday afternoon at the home of Iter mother, Mrs. A. R. Atkinson. A .large number of visitors were present, and the delightfully sunny, afternoon, to say nothing of the exquisitely beautiful- viow that is to be obtained from Wadestown of tlio harbour and mountains, added greatly to the pleasure of the occasion. Plenty of entertainment had been provided, chief of which, perhaps was a musical programme organised by Miss Ethelwyn Kirk, and a wonderful magic garden, brief glimpses of which showed fairies and elves at play, as well as views of beautiful archways, and all manner of animals. The two front rooms and the verandah were utilised for the various attractions of the sale, and the flower stall, oil which were quantities of beautiful spring flowers, and the cake stall did much to add to tho financial results of the afternoon. Afternoon tea was also provided. Songs were sung by Miss Ethelwyn Kirk, Miss Gyneth, and Hiss Wylie; Miss C. Kirk recited; and Dr. von Danneville, as well as the little organiser of the afternoon's undertaking, contributed pianoforte music. In all the sum of £12 16s. Id. was taken, of which.£4 10s. goes to the Mayor's Belgian Fund, and the remainder to Sir John Kirk's ' Crutch and League of Kindness Fund. Mrs. Atkinson and her little are very grateful to all who kindly assisted in making the effort so successful. ! Amateur Wood-Cutters. On Saturday last a squad of the National. Reserve, Island Bay-Berhampore section, visited the Home of Compassion with axes and saws, and were busily employed the whole of the afternoon in converting the timber secured from' the sea and delivered to the home into a size suitable for use as fuel for the heating apparatus.; It is tho intention of various members of the company to continue these operations 'until the whole of tho timber secured ;has been converted into kindling wood. During the afternoon several lady residents of the bay supplied afternoon tea, which'was /much appreciated by the perspiring crowd of amateur wood-cutters. Utilising Women far Work. A clause of the National Registration Bill indicates that the Government may include women in the reckoning of strength for war-winning, but the mildness of the .text doos not promise that the authorities have any intention to apply the statute to women immediately. Mr. L. A. Abraham, of Palmerston', has received a cablegram from London that his 'son, Lieut. Martin Abraham,was married on Monday last to Miss Phyllis Birkett, • states an exchange. 'The cablegram also states that Lieut. Abraham, who has a. commission in tho Artillery, leaves for. the front immediately. It is expected that his_ battery will be'iii action in Franoe this week. Boforo the war broke out, Lieut. Abraham. was studying, at Cambridge, and had recoived his B.A. degree. The annual "social' of the pupils of the Petone Technical School was held last evening at' the Petone'Drill Hall, and was attended by upwards of 200 persons-. . Messrs. Cowie and Mockeridge acted as M.C.'s, and the music was supplied by Mrs. Pollock's orchestra. Mr. J., Castle, the chairman of tho Technical School Board, controlled the card tables, and a committee of young men attended to the supper room. A very enjoyable time was spent. Mrs. Scullin, of Hastings, entertained several members of tho Bth'Reinforcements at her on Monday afternoon; About 70 guests were present.- Private R. _J.- Burnside was the recipient from his sister of a wristlet watch. The'ladies present also showed'theii; appreciation of the departing soldiers by presenting each with a small token of esteem on the eve of their departure. Mrs. Sinclair 1 , wife of Dr.' Sinclair, of Gisborrie, leaves to-day by the Tainui for London.
