LOCAL 'AND GENERAL,

Goodl progress continues to be made in the annual handicap tourneys of the Working Men's Club. In the chess tourney the leading scores to 'date are:— Peaks (Class IV), fij.wins, U losses; Key (Class VII). 4—l; Barnes (Class I), 3—o; Larking (Class VII), 3—2; Burgess (Class IV), 2—l; C. R-eid (Class VII), 2—l; and Mowtell (Class VI), li—ll. The remaining five competitors have so far failed to win half their games.

In tho club's draughts tourney the best tallies to date aro (wins, losses, and to play):—J. Reid, 19—5—16; Burgess, 9—3—, 28; C. Reid, 8-4-28; AVright, BJ-7J-24; AV. H. Smith, 4-4-32; Douglas, 3-1-36. The sealed handicap will not, of course, be disclosed until tne final round has been disposed of.

Further games were played last week in the Wellington Chess Club's match against a team chosen from tflio various iocal bowling clubs. The position now is as follows:—Club team, 10J wins; bowlens, 7J wins; and 17 outstanding games, which may be playod at timo in . the next three weeks. The bowlers have thus plenty of opportunities for overtaking the club team.

The best form in the Wellington South Chess Club's tourney was shown last week by Messrs. Purchas, Harper, Perrott, and Bland. The members of this club are looking forward to AVednesday's match with the Ngaio Chess Olub, this being the first local inter-dub contest of the present season.

The play-off to decide the triple tio in the Ngaio Club's tourney was commenced on Monday evening, Carman being pitted against AVild. The game is marked Incomplete, and requires a second sitting. Wild holds the advantage at present, having won a minor piece. E. E. Hicks drew the bye. This is thought to bo tho first time that three players have tied for first prize in a local chess tourney. Mr. H. C. Skeet, wlio was hon. eeo. of tho AVellington Chess Club, and also of the New Zealand Chess Association 20 years ago, is -at present in AVellington after an absenco of many years. Tho older members of'the AVellington Chess Club are looking forward with much pleasuro to his promised visit to the club'room,
