MAWERS OF INTEREST FROM FAS AND MAI,'

Ciris' College Entertainment, The Wellington Girls' College entertainment, which was given in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hail on Friday evening ior tho Wounded Soldiers' Fund, was repeated on Saturday evening, again under the direction of Miss Constanco Smith, games mistress at the college. There was a largo audience, every seat being taken. Much appreciation of the entiro programme was displayed, and if anything tho performances of the girls were even bettor than on the previous occasion. During the evening Mr. Hill, chairman of the Patriotic Committee, who had asked Miss M'Lean, principal of tho college, if ho might take advantage of the presenco of the parents at the entertainment to make an acknowledgment on their behalf to Mrs. James I-lannali for her valuable assistance in designing and helping to choose the materials for the drosses worn by tho children who had taken part in the Coronation of the Carnival Queen, presented the latter with "a beautifully-illuminated address, tha work of Mr. Hanna. It boro a coloured photograph of Mrs. Hannah, and grateful references to what she had done for the children and for the cause. Mrs. Hannah made a brief speech, thanking everyone for their kindness' and their gift, and said that what she had dbne was very little compared to the part which had been played by the parents, since they had had to pay for the dresses. Sweets and souvenirs, the latter designed and illustrated by Mr. Hanna, were sold during the evening, and it_ is expected that the college will again have sustained its reputation for substantial assistance to patriotic causes, by Friday and Saturday, evenings' entertainments. Mrs. Massey and Miss Massey' were among tho audience oil Saturday evening.

The Soldiers' Room.' A party of Kliandallah ladies were in charge ol' the Soldiers' .lloom on Saturday evening, and the soldiers who liave visited the room are most appreciative of its comforts, and have announced their intention of making it well known to their friends. As on the opening night, it looked very bright and cosy, and with Miss Newton at the piano there was no lack of music, while cards and the writing tables' offered attractions to others. Mrs. W. F. Massey visited the room during. the evening. Last evening Mrs. F. M. B. Fisher and Miss Beauclianip provided the refreshments, and the room having been open from 4 o'clock in the afternoon the re-freshments-were of a more substantial nature, to suit the circumstances. Mr. Fuller.lms most kindly announced his intention of screening a reference to the room at his pioturo theatres.

A Farewell Presentation Ceremony. Sister E. B. Reid, wlio has for some time past been in charge of the Stokes Ward at the Napier Hospital, left oil Friday en route for England, where she is to be married. On Thursday night tho medical and nursing staffs assembled in the ward and with those patients present bid farewell to Sister Roid. Dr. Gilray, resident medical officer, eulogised tho splendid work done in the institution by Sister Reid. Ho asked her to accept from tho patients a handsome silver-mounted umbrella and a travelling cushion. Sister Fleming, on behalf of tho sisters of the institution, presented the guest with a dispatch box, and Nurso White asked Sister Reid to acccpt from the nurses of the Stokes Ward a beautifully engraved serviette ring. School Children's Effort for Wounded Soldiers. A very successful sale of work was held by the pupils of the Balquhidder School, Khandallah, on Saturday afternoon and evening in tho Khaudallah Town Hall. Tho building had been prettily decorated and the stalls were laden with many useful and dainty articles. The sale was opened by the singing of the New Zealand National Anthem, followed bjr a display of Russian exercises and fancy dances by tho pupils. Songs and recitations-were also given and afternoon tea served. There was a large attendance of visitors, and very satisfactory business was transacted at tho stalls. As a-result of this effort the school children have handed to .the Mayor of Onslow, Mr. C. C. Crump, a cheque for £31. Of this amount £20 is to be devoted to the fund for tho New Zealand wounded soldiers and the balance of £11 to tho Belgian Fund. Carterton News. '

Members of Sfc. Mark's Church Choir, Carterton, on Thursday evening presented Miss Kathleen Deller with a 'silver entree dish, to mark the occasion of her approaching marriage, which takes place shortly. Tile appointment' of Miss Sellars, of the Croydon Boys' School, Wellington, as assistant mistress at Belvedere, has been confirmed. Miss Sellars will take up her duties on Monday next. Miss Davies, who has been relieving at Belvedere, goes to Nireaha, Ekotahuna. Mr. and Mrs. W. Earl, of Belvedere, who-are leaving for the Auckland province', were entertained by the residents of Belvedere on Friday evening, and were presented with tokens of esteem. To Mr. Earl was given a leather portmanteau, and to Mrs. Earl a silver teapot.

Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Jones, ef Dunedin, are visiting Napier. ' Mis. A. R. Welch', one of the early settlers in the Wairarapa; passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 67. years. The deceased lady, who was predeceased by her . husband some years ago, is survived by a family of two sons and four daughters. Mrs. M'Bride, wife of Dr. L. H. M'Bride, surgeon of the Taimii, arrived from London by that vessel on Saturday evening. A quiet wedding-took place at St. Joseph's Church, Waverley, on July 17, when Mr. Gordon Wm. Anstis was married to Miss Catherine Mylechreest 'Quayle. The bride was given away by. her father, and was attended bj - her sister, • Miss Madge Quayle. The bridegroom was attended by his cousin, Mr. C. D. Philin. Owing to four of the bride's brothers being at the front, the ceremony was of a quiet nature. The death occurred at tho Bowen Street Private Hospital on Friday niglit of Mrs. Healy, of Brooklyn, wife of Sir. W. F- Healy, sccond assistant wharfinger in the Wellington Harbour Board. Mrs. Healy had been ill for a considerable time past, and death was not altogether unexpected. The' grey calm of yesterday was pleasantly varied at. Oriental Bay in the afternoon, when the New Zealand Natives' Association Band played a programme of music in front of the kiosk which is now being used as a military convalescent hospital. The music was greatly appreciated, and tho sum of £5 Is. Id. was collected for the Ladies' Guild of the Association, winch is at present doing good work for the Sick and Wounded Soldiers' Fund.

The matron of the Hospital desires to acknowledge with thanks gifts of cake, eggs, and fruit for sick soldiers from the following ladies: —Lady (Jibbes, Mesdames F. Samuel, C. B. Russell, Galdwyn, Andrew, H. Jackson, J. 'H. Wallace, H. Beauchamp. Tho bazaar promoted by Miss Ivy Skinner, in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund, concluded with a successful dance on Friday evening at tlie Tjower Hutt Lyceum. As a result tho sum of £5 is to be handed over to tho fund. Packwood. Thanks are duo to the proprietor of the hall and to the committee for their efforts. On Saturday the Australian nurses, ..who, as guests of the New Zealand Government, are touring tho Dominion, arrived in Wellington, by tho WillAchra from Nelson. Arrangements for their stay in Wellington had been made by the Mayoress, Mrs. J. P. Luke, and they liavo been'the guests of Miss Coatos, Mrs. Arthur Pearce, Mrs. L. Blundell, and Mrs. A. N. Miles. Their travels in tho South Island have been immensely enjoyed, and they have been delighted' with all they have 6een. During the week-end they were entertained at an afternoon tea at Government House by Her Excellency the Countess of Liverpool, and to-day. they are to bo taken out to the camp at Trentham by tlie Mayor and Mayoress; In the evening they leave for Auckland and Rotorua.
