OPENING OF SOLDIERS ROOM
It is seldom that the Sydney Street Schoolroom has appeared so thoroughly cheery and cosy-looking as ( it did last evening, when, as the Soldiers' Room, it was opened for the use and comfort of the soldiers when on leave from Trentham. Bright fires were burning away on either siao of tho room, nacs draped the walls, and numbers of small red-covered tables arranged with writing materials, books, magazines, periodicals, etc., were set about the room ready for use. The stage, carpeted witn red baize, added to the general note or warmth and comfort, and palms and flowers in profusion sent_ in by very many friends, added their note Or beauty to the general effect. With two pianos and a gramaphone there should be no lack of music, though if used at the same time the effects might be somewhat disconcerting.Chairs and cushions had been sent in, and many other comforts, which cannot fail to be appreciated. Mrs. W. F. Massey and Mrs. Herdman provided the refreshments last evening, and to-night Mrs Herbert Kirkcaldie and a number of Khandallah ladies will be in charge. The hon. treasurer of tho Soldiers Room Fund wishes to acknowledge the following donations to tho fund:—Hon. Sir Francis Bell, £20; Mr. A. Penrce, £5; K.H., £5; G.E.P., £3; Dr. Murray Litchfield, £1 Is.; also the following monthly subscriptions:—Mrs. L. Bundell, Mrs. W. Nathan, Mrs. H.
