The grain market remains in a quiet state, - there being little business doing, and no changes to note. ■ Those merchants who liavo made sales ol potatoes to Australia are obtaining permits to fill the contracts entered into, but further shipments will be prohibited. In the mom time there is no business doing wit-h growers. The nominal price is £5 to £5 55.. at country -stations, but there are no sellers. The North Island is still refraining from making any offers, and locol business is thorefore suspended. It is reported that crops now being dug are not turning out too well, probably having been affected by the recent severe frosts. Onions are a little firmer, and ore now quoted at £3 to £3 ss. at country stations. An Engish magazine contains an interesting article on the on.ployment of machine-guns, especially of the lightor type, by the Germans. They use them as offensive weapons, for sniping purposes, to flank a trench firs, and in various other situations hitherto looked upon as beyond the power of a- ma-chine-gun. The gun is a marvellously powerful arm in the hands of thosn wio know.how to use it. It is a nerveless weapon. Its fira is consequently more accurate than that of the rifle, Its volunio of fire is enormous, and is entirely under the control of one man; consequently it. can he diverged to right ar to left at will, while rifle fire from men in action can only, as is well known, be directed to their front. There is as much difference between machineguns and infantry fire to-day as there was between light infantry and heavy infantry fire a hundred years ago. The annual report of tho Poverty Bay A. and P. Association, which is aieeting to-day, states that many improvements have been effected during the year on the present show grounds, tho most important of which has been the erection of new draught horse stands, the same being erected with good hardwood timber, and accommodate comfortably the large entry of draught horses, which was much appreciated by exhibitors. With regard to now show grounds, a good, substantial boundary fence has been erected. It was thought at the time of our lant annual meeting that the Government irmild take the ground for the purpose of establishing an experimental plot, but owing to the war, etc., tho matter has been allowed to drop.
