MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court on Saturday, when John Millanta and Frank Albert Barton, oil remand, appeared to answer a charge of the theft of a number of fowls and a leg of pork from a restaurant in Courtonay Place. The defence to this charge was that the men had bought the fowls and pork from another man. The informations wero dismissed, but for receiving stolen property Millanta was fined 405., in default one month's imprisonment, and for a similar offence Barton was sentenced to one month's imprisonment.
William John Moore, who was arrested on his arrival from Hobart on Saturday, was remanded to appear at Dunedin, on a charge that he left New Zealand without permission, while a maintenance order was out against him. Jessie M'Ewan was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for escaping; from the Salvation Army Home, and Thomas Campbell was fined £3, in default ono month's imprisonment, for using obscene language. For insobriety Margaret Withers, Herbert Harvey, Victor Lusty, and John Sullivan, were fined 10s. each, in. default 48 hours' imprisonment. Angus M'Kay was fined 205., in default three days' imprisonment; Thomas Forsyth was sentenced to ->ne month's imprisonment, and five first offenders were dealt with.
