NOTES AND COMMENTS

[By Glescoe.]

The Gisborne Racing Club's Winter Meeting will be held on Thursday and Saturday of this week. In connection witu u« Wellington Racing Club's Winter aieeting owners are reminded that acceptances lor the lirst day's handicaps and entries fur the Trial Piute ciose next Monday. The Hastings horseman, J. Deeroy, rode three winners at cue Napier meeting. Two ol' the winners he steered on the Bocond day were ridden by other horsemen on tne opening day. -

Braeburn scored, by a very narrow margin in the i'oraite Hurdles at iNapier on Saturday. He was meeting iiow on much better terms tnan on tne opening day, when the i'ordell horS9 prevailed, but Braeburn had been unlucky enougn lo get mixed up with Beldame when the latter fell. Bam Pan, runner-up lo Braeburn, is coming back to his best form, and as he is quite at home in heavy going Mr. Hassatl's guiding should not be long iii getting on the winning list.

It was intended to give Alorning a run in the steeplechase at Napier on Saturday, but when the heavy rain came on Mr. I''. Armstrong decided lo leave the son of Sylvia Park in his box, It is reported that A. Julian, who had the mount on the gelding in the National Hurdles when he won, will again be in the saddle in the big cross-country event at Riccuton.

L. Hill, who was killed in action at the Dardanelles last week, was formerly a well-known horseman, and rode teveral winners from the Porirua stable. Increasing weight caused hiiu to forsake the saddle, and he went to Cairo with the Fir3t Expeditionary Forces.

The well-known hurdle riiier, P. Meagher, has joined the ranks at Trentham.

The Achilles mare Plunder could not act in the heavy going at Napier, and she was railed home without waiting for the second day's races. Another Trentham candidate in Maltegardo also had to forfeit her engagements on account of the heavy state of the going.

The Forirua jumpers, .Scrutineer and Naupata, both of whom claim the defunct Jlahaki as their sire, were in minor places in each of their starts at the Napier meeting.

From a numerical point of view the onirics received for the big treble at Rieearlon are highly satisfactory, but it cannot be said that the jumpers engaged in the Steeplechase arc up to the standard of former years. Two Australianowned horses in Plymouth and Clontaft are nominated, and it is reported that there is every probability of the pair.being sent over. It. will be'interesting to see how Mr. H n nrys aw«sos Clontaft with Chortle. The former in the first llighl of jumpers on the other side, while Chortle's Awapuni Gold Cup and Hawke'a fey. CUE will sbsjis Ww.ElssJy. .?.£.Kwsfrk
