HINT TO THE MILLERS OF BRITAIN

MUST BE NO EXPLOITATION. (Rec. June 27, 4.5 p.m.) London, June 26. Mr. Walter llunciman (President of the Board of Trade), speaking at West Hartlepool, said that one of the first duties of the Government was to prevent the exploitation of the economic situation for private gain. "This is not the time for profit, but for equal sacrifice," he said. "The price of wheat is falling, and flour must follow." He would meet millers next week, he added, and remind them of this elementary fact. "The Government does not want to take over the whole of the food supply, bat if suppliers exploit the national necessities wo must act drastically. This may be a war of finance. Thero may be a breakdown in that direction which will bring Germany to her luiees." Meat and Coal. Mr. Runciman went on_ to say that a shortage of meat for civilians was imminent. Careful calculations showed that there would be sufikient if two pounds less per head were consumed monthly, during summer and winter. He added that if coal owners could not arrange for a limitation of the enormously high coal prices, the Government would ask Parliament to step in. A FURTHER CONFERENCE. (Rec. June 27, 3.25 p.m.) London, June 2G. Mr. AValter Runciman (President of the Board of Trade), presided over a further conference of coal-owners and men, without rosult. Tho owners were disinclined to concede a new agreement extending beyond the termination of the war.
